Eden Westwood
As one of several large mill towns 'next door' to Manchester the town of Oldham shares its history of rapid growth in the time in the period of the industrial revolution and rapid decline in the post-war period. The town is home to over 100,000 people and many diverse cultural groups. The area of Chadderton is one such melting pot, particularly its Westwood neighbourhood within which the majority of the population are Bangladeshi Muslims.
Eden is no stranger to Oldham, indeed this new project is the third in the town. This is also the third Eden project across the Network to be located in a multi-cultural area, the others being Longsight in Manchester and Old Trafford in Trafford borough. The multi-cultural context presents an additional layer of challenge to the mission and ministry of this new team but there is no more pressing challenge in our nation at this time. Communities like Westwood desperately need to encounter the grace of God.
Working with local partner 'Firwood Church' we are currently in the process of building the team of people who are moving into Westwood, making their homes there and beginning to reach out to the young people and families around them. Leader Steve Evans has been in post for a few months now and is already seeing his initial vision for the project becoming a reality.
