Eden in the North East England's north east is known for its great spirit and character. The towns and cities along its coastline are home to well over a million people. Many of these residents have found themselves facing serious economic challenges as the primary industries of coal mining and shipping collapsed creating an employment vacuum. In 2008 Eden's leadership team were invited to meet church leaders from around Tyneside to discuss whether Eden teams could be deployed into some of the region's most deprived estates. A great bond was formed and a commitment made to work together in the years ahead to see multiple teams established. Since that time detailed discussions with a broad spectrum of potential partners have taken place and it is now hoped that the 'Eden North East' charity will become a reality in early 2010 with the first Eden team launched by the summer. Conversations are also underway in Wearside and Teeside to ensure that communities throughout the region can benefit from what Eden has to offer.
