Focus on Leigh

leigh-map

Leigh is a 'blue-collar' town 12 miles west of Manchester. With a proud industrial heritage the town now encompasses opposing poles of wealth and poverty.

Once upon a time Leigh boomed as a centre of textile production and then a mining community but over the years both pillars of the local economy collapsed and since then the area has suffered from unemployment, loss of identity and lack of hope. Not surprisingly this has had a significant impact on the young people growing up there.

Eden's focus is the Diamond St estate where generational unemployment and poor health are endemic. Young people here have few positive role models and so struggle in traditional education and often continue the cycle of unemployment their parents and grandparents have been trapped in.

Eden Leigh is partnered with Sports Village Church - a new plant from Christ Church Pennington meeting in the community's new sports complex.
